Poncey – October Member of the Month – Valerie Nowell

Congratulations Val!!

Val has been a member at the Ponce gym for a little over 3 years. Her determination and willingness to always do better in the gym hasn’t gone unnoticed. Val shows up each day with a positive attitude, works extremely hard, and always works to improve on her weaknesses.
Be sure to congratulate Val this week if you see her. Congrats Val and Keep up the Great work!

1. Age?
48
2. What do you do for a living?
Enforce the Clean Air Act, I’m an attorney for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
3. How long have you been a member at BTB?
3 years, 3 months
4. Did you workout prior to joining BTB? If so, Where?
I was a competitive athlete for many years as a gymnast and a mountain bike racer. But I lost most of my fitness after starting my career and having a child. When I joined BTB, I could barely hang from the bar for even a few seconds.
5. What made you try CrossFit?
It looked SO fun! I was reluctant to try it because I felt so out of shape, but Sydnee Adams, (who was already a member), brought me to a free Saturday workout and I was hooked. I joined that day.
6. What is your biggest CrossFit accomplishment?
Strict pull ups I guess. Like I said, I could barely hang from the bar, and now I can do consecutive strict pull ups. What I’m happiest about though, is that I keep getting stronger and faster (in the past month, I hit prs for snatch, overhead squat, deadlifts and Annie, yay!!!)
7. What is your biggest accomplishment outside of the box that you feel CrossFit inspired or helped with?
I’m a happier person because I feel strong and fit
8. Do you get more excited over a Weightlifting PR or getting a better score on a WOD you’ve done multiple times?
Weightlifting PR because its really obvious that you’ve improved. You couldn’t do it before and now you can.
9. What is your favorite lift?
Snatch!
10. What’s one movement you have to scale that you would like to RX?
Muscle ups, then I’ll be a BAM(no F, trying to clean up my language)
11. What is your favorite WOD?
Filthy fifty – or a chipper with an Olympic lift
12. What is your least favorite WOD?
I don’t have a least favorite WOD. Any WOD is better than sitting on the couch.
13. Did you ever think the a sport of fitness (CrossFit) would be for you?
As soon as I tried it, I loved it. CrossFit requires balance, coordination, strength, and endurance, and I like challenging myself in those areas. CrossFit is always different. Its always a little scary and its as close as I’ll get to doing gymnastics again.
14. If you can convince one person in your life to do CrossFit with you, who would it be?
My sister Rachel, she had a baby 6 months ago
15. What is your all time favorite food?
hot, fresh kettlecorn
16. What is something that nobody knows about you, and you would not mind sharing?
I wish I could dance
17. What is your most memorable moment at BTB?
Getting through all 100 pull ups in Murph
18. Why BTB Fitness?
BTB is a collegial place with interesting people that you probably wouldn’t run into otherwise. The coaches are well-trained, provide great instruction and welcome everyone. What a find! A friendly place that helps build you into something tougher and stronger.

Buckhead – October Member of the Month – Annette Filiatrault

Congratualtions Annette!

Annette has been training with BTB for 2.5 years now. The coaching staff have seen a HUGE improvement in your workouts and strength training since the beginning of the year. Your improvement since that time has been nothing short of phenomenal. You always show up to the gym (7am)with a smile on your face and are eager to learn. Besides increasing your attendance this year, you can tell you’ve been putting in the work to continue to improve on your weaknesses and be better all around athlete.

Be sure to congratulate Annette this week if you see her. Congratulations again and Keep up the Great work!

1. Age?
40
2. What do you do for a living?
I am a foot and ankle doctor (Podiatrist – Affiliated Foot and Ankle)
3. How long have you been a member at BTB?
~2.5 years
4. Did you workout prior to joining BTB? If so, Where?
I had never belonged to a gym in my life till BTB. Prior to BTB, I relied on soccer and running for exercise.
5. What made you try CrossFit?
Our twins were 6 months old and life was pretty hectic. I needed to find something that I could fit into my busy schedule. I had friends that had done CrossFit and really liked it so I thought I would give it a try.
6. What is your biggest CrossFit accomplishment?
I had a private goal this last year of getting my pull-ups before the age of 40 and accomplished that.
7. What is your biggest accomplishment outside of the box that you feel CrossFit inspired or helped with?
No one big accomplishment, but being able to compete on a high level with 20-something year olds on the soccer field has been enjoyable.
8. Do you get more excited over a Weightlifting PR or getting a better score on a WOD you’ve done multiple times?
The most excited I have gotten was my recent front squat PR after the squat series we did, it was the only time I have ever rung that bell.
9. What is your favorite lift?
Clean and jerk.
10. What’s one movement you have to scale that you would like to RX?
I want to be able to RX it all one day, but I am particularly bad at OHS and Snatch.
11. What is your favorite WOD?
Fight Gone Bad.
12. What is your least favorite WOD?
Randy, snatches are not a strength
13. Did you ever think the sport of fitness (CrossFit) would be for you?
I never thought lifting weights would be my thing, even as a collegiate athlete they never cared if the soccer girls lifted weights and I avoided them. Until I started CrossFit, I never thought I could do some of the things I can now do, or for that matter ever have a bicep muscle. Thanks BTB!
14. If you can convince one person in your life to do CrossFit with you, who would it be?
I already got my wish. 6 months ago my wife, Summer, decided to start CrossFit at BTB and she has been loving it.
15. What is your all time favorite food?
Chips, salsa, cheese dip = my cheat day favorite
16. What is something that nobody knows about you, and you would not mind sharing?
Margaritas turn me into a kissing pirate.
17. What is your most memorable moment at BTB?
My first unassisted pull-up.
18. Why BTB Fitness?
BTB’s locations (one near my house, one by my office) is what got me to BTB, but it is really the coaches, owner, members, and programming that has kept me inspired and wanting to improve every day.

Ben Bergeron’s Business of Excellence Seminar

BOX Seminar – BTB CrossFit Buckhead

What makes a World-Class CrossFit Affiliate? In the words of Greg Glassman, it’s the “Constant and Relentless Pursuit of Excellence.” In this one-day seminar, Ben Bergeron of CrossFit New England will explore the best practices of the world’s best affiliates, and teach you how to use these practices to create excellence in your affiliate.

Learn the ins-and-outs of running a World-Class Affiliate:

– Hiring, training and paying coaches
– Marketing your affiliate and getting so many members that you’ll have to turn them away
– Creating a community of trust, support, honesty and excellence
– Organizing your affiliate to run efficiently
– The details of a successful on-ramp program

There is no substitute for being a great coach, but just like being a great chef doesn’t necessarily make you a great restaurant owner, simply being a great coach may not be sufficient to run a world-class affiliate. This seminar will turn great coaches into GREAT affiliate owners.

WHAT: The Business of Excellence (B.O.X.) Seminar
WHO: Affiliate owners, coaches, staff and anyone interested in “the pursuit of excellence”

**BTB CrossFit Buckhead, October 11th, 2015 (Sunday)

Buckhead – September Member of the Month – Stu Bernstein

Stu – aka The Mayor of Buckhead, aka The Godfather of Buckhead has been a member at BTB for about 5 years.
His steady progress over the years to improve in the gym is one of the most noticeable things all the coaches said about him. Besides being very coachable and implementing any fixes to movements they give him. He’s constantly looking to improve his weaknesses i.e HSPU’s. You can catch him practicing HSPU after classes and during Sunday open gym. He’s always giving a 110% every time he’s in the gym no matter how bad the wod is.
Great Job Stu!
